The solar industry became well established during the 1970's when national concerns about OPEC's oil embargo encouraged the use of alternative energy sources.  Those concerns resulted in government incentives to encourage the use of solar energy.

At this time, Don Harter was devoting his engineering talents to the solar industry by designing a solar pool heating panel and a manufacturing facility to build it in 1976.   That product was so well-conceived that it is the only solar pool heating product built in the seventies that is still being sold competitively today, virtually unchanged from its original design.   Furthermore, it was the first tube-on-fin ("tube and web") design.   Clearly, twenty-three years ago, Don's product was ahead of its time.

In 1988, Don established his own manufacturing company, Harter Industries, to manufacture the Hi-Temp rubber mat-type solar collector he developed for applications where it would be difficult or more costly to use panel-type solar collectors.

In 1992 Harter Industries introduced EZ Heat solar systems for heating above-ground pools.  These revolutionary products cost less than gas heaters.  For the first time, an above-ground pool could be heated at an affordable price. 

In 1993, Harter Industries began a project to build the finest solar pool heater ever produced and create an all-new manufacturing facility to build it.

Using meticulous planning, ingenuity, unequalled experience, and a no-holds-barred use of capital, a new product was born in January 1996.  It vaulted into a leadership role in the solar pool heating industry, displaying a design for durability, performance, and quality of manufacturing that others now try to attain.
